Beyond the world of DIY home projects, there is a lot of DIY cooking and recipe testing that goes on in the house. The cooking has quickly evolved to trying Italian dishes, new ‘gourmet’ sandwiches, vegetarian dishes, and lots of Indian food! This is fun and exciting-until you realize that you have plastic bins and old storage containers overflowing with a mess of unorganized Oregano and Garam Masala! I’m sure there are many people that can relate to wanting to throw a quick dash of spice into a dish and then it takes pulling every last spice out before you find the spice needed. It is an absolute must in any professional-or want to be professional kitchen to have organization and your spices are a great place to start.
Choose A Spice Jar
This one of a kind DIY spice project came after much consideration and need. Fumbling through spice after spice just to find the right one was all too common. There was no doubt the spices needed some organization and some love; therefore, we had to find the right jars rather than the plastic store bought containers. From there we hunted down the perfect, yet inexpensive, jar which we found at one of our favorite stores – World Market. Each jar rang in at just under $1.00 for a total of $20.
What’s Your Label Style?
When shopping around we came across the perfect label that was going to give us the look we wanted. We went with an that had an old, traditional feel to it. Personally, I really like the Avery labels; you can design and print your label online via their website. It’s so simple! All you do is just input the label number located on the package and then follow the pre-designed template.
When thinking about your own spices here are a few things to consider:
- Do you need all your spices readily available or would it be okay to have your go-to spices at hand and the rest neatly stored away?
- Do you want the spices to be visible or hidden in a closed cabinet? If you want them exposed, consider buying all matching jars such as the ones from World Market that we purchased
- What style spice rack fits your style and kitchen design?
This is a perfect example of a quick and easy project to tackle, that for very few dollars can leave you with a huge payoff. Not only did this project solve our need for organization, but it also added some visual interest which our guests have not stopped talking about. Take a look at the video below and see how it went for us.
