Whether you have huge walk-in closets or barely enough room for your undies, organizing your closest is a must when you’re selling your house. I’m always so shocked when I see a potential buyer stepping over the homeowners clutter to take a peak in the closet. A messy closet does not leave a good impression, period! It’s one of the easiest things you can do to make your house stand out and it doesn’t have to cost you a dime.
Having everything organized gives the appearance of having more space. Even if you’ve got the smallest of closets, having it organized makes it feel not so small. Buyers want storage and a closet that is packed full of “stuff” does not say spacious.
Here are five things you can do to your closets that will help you seal the deal:
- Pack Up Your Things
- Use Similar Hangers
- Use Baskets
- Paint It
- Add Some Shelves
Pack Up Your Things
Less is more when it comes to staging a closet. If you’ve got a closet that is overflowing at the hinges then you need to temporarily get rid of some things. Pack your things up in a bin and store them elsewhere. You should have a minimal amount of clothes hanging in the closet. This will make the space feel bigger and well organized. A well organized space makes buyers feel like the house has been well taken care of.
Use Similar Hangers
Having all the same hangers is another way to make the space look organized. If you don’t have all the same hangers then use ones that are similar. For example, use all plastic or metal ones, don’t intermix them.
Use Baskets To Hide Clutter
If there are some things you just can’t pack away then try putting them in baskets. This works great for some of the “clutter” that you use regularly. Don’t just leave it piled up on a shelf, organize it by tucking it away in a basket. There are also some inexpensive boxes you can use for the same purpose.
Paint The Closet
A freshly painted closet looks clean. You don’t have to match the closet to the rest of the room, especially if the room is a dark color and you’ve got a small space. It’s perfectly acceptable to paint the closet a white or off-white even when the room itself is a different color. If you have any old paint laying around then that can be your go-to paint for your closets.
Add Some Shelves
If you can’t stand your closet set up then chances are a buyer won’t like it either. Adding a few shelves to a closet can make a big difference. I always suggest a well-built organizer over the cheap plastic ones. Although they can be a bit pricey (especially if you’ve got a big closet), a nice closet organizer has proven to be well worth it for me. If it’s just not in the budget then try adding a shelf or two yourself to maximize the storage space.
