There’s nothing I like more then saving money. I don’t think you have to put yourself in debt just to have a nice home. Over the years I have found many ways to save money when it comes to fixing up the house. There are several ways to save that the average homeowner doesn’t always know about. Here are a few things I’ve learned along the way that will hopefully save you some dinero too.
How To Save Money
- Buy in bulk: Many items are available in what they call contractors packs. This can save a good amount of money when it comes to things like baseboard and trim. Recently, I purchased some baseboard that only cost me $60 because I bought 120 ft of it. If I would have just purchased what I needed for the room it would have cost me $50 for 55 ft. In this case, I know I will be needing more baseboard down the road so this was a much smarter buy.
- Partner with the contractors desk: If you are taking on a big project like finishing a basement or a new kitchen don’t be afraid to ask for a discount. If you know you are going to be dropping a pretty penny on the project it is very likely they will cut you some slack. I have spent many hours at the Home Depot Pro Desk and I’ve seen them help out homeowners in this way.
- Use a Credit Card: Let me first say I do not recommend this for everyone. However, if you are someone who knows how to manage a credit card then this can save you money. Many hardware stores, like Home Depot and Lowes, offer special incentives for new cardholders. Often they will give you a percentage off on your purchases or a one time savings. If you are making a big purchase this could save you thousands. As long as you pay off the charges before any interest kicks in then this is an easy way to keep money in your pocket.
- Register Online: Many of the big hardware stores offer special coupons to those who sign up to receive emails. This is a great way to get some exclusive deals that can be used online and in the stores. I often get great coupons for discounts on paint this way and it always saves me some money.
These are just a few easy things you can do to cut the cost on your updates. I truly believe there are ways to get the high end looks without breaking the bank. There are many more way to save money on your home makeover as well so stayed tuned for more ideas.
